Creating a Writer’s Platform and Building an Audience

Although this blog was intended to communicate my thoughts about compassionate living in Miami it was also intended to improve my writing skills and learn how to engage with like-minded individuals.  With that said, this post will be dedicated to reviewing two case studies from authors that have been successful in marketing themselves through various media formats.  These case studies were published in Create Your Writer Platform.

The first case study that I reviewed was the interview with Gina Holmes. She is a fiction author who writes inspirational stories in hopes of helping others. She has written novels and also has a blog/website. Holmes originally started a blog in hopes of exposing herself and her work but wasn’t very successful in gaining a following. She went to Google and began doing a search to find out how other authors built their platform. This was when she realized that many other people had the same idea of researching author’s platforms by reading interviews and discovering what was successful for other writers. Her next blog post was an interview with an author and her blog hits immediately increased. I think that research is was a great step in her process that helped her to identify her audience and find the best ways to attract them. I have learned that before you can begin creating your platform, you need to be fully versed in who your audience is, where they are spending their time on the web and what they are interested in reading on a daily basis.  Holmes also utilized social media to build her platform and sell books. She mentions that Facebook sharing was a great marketing tool for her that helped increase her books sales. I understand the importance of social media, so I would definitely be using that when creating my platform.  (Sambuchino, 2012).

The last case study that I enjoyed was that of Brette Sember. She is a non-fiction author who writes about cooking, lifestyle and finance. She also created a blog that helped her gain a following. She has a website called Martha and Me where she spent a year apprenticing herself under Martha Stewart. She would then post blogs that detailed what worked for her and what did not. However, she also found other ways to engage with the community. Each time she tried something from Martha’s website and then blogged about it she would post a link to her blog post in the comment section of Martha’s website. This allowed her to gain a new audience that otherwise might not reach her website. I think that engaging with others through blogs is a great way to gain a following. I currently follow a few blogs centered around food, veganism, animals rights and music. These are all things that I’m interested in writing about. If I were to start interacting in the comments sections and promoting my blog there I would have a better chance of increasing my followers.  (Sambuchino, 2012).

I hope this provides some helpful tools and steps for aspiring writers!  Good luck!

Vegan Events – Fall 2013 – Miami

It is officially fall in South Florida!  Although the weather remains in the high 80’s, the humidity has dropped which makes this the perfect time of year for outdoor events (besides the beach).  Over the next few months, the city will be hosting a number of great events for vegans, ranging from festivals to potlucks to activism opportunities.  Here are a few exciting events that I’ll be attending:

Love and a Movie Brunch – O Cinema – October 13, 2013

The Fruit Hunters

Located in the heart of Wynwood, O Cinema will be hosting its monthly vegan brunch.  This month the film is The Fruit Hunters, a documentary starring Bill Pullman.  The story follows scientists, adventurers, and fruit hunters as they travel the world searching for rare and exotic fruit.  The film travels through history and geography to show how connected we are to the fruits we eat.  The vegan brunch menu includes quiche muffins, waffles with fruit compote, green salad with starfruit dressing, peach-mamey cobbler, and Dorito-spiced popcorn.

For more details on the event, visit O Cinema’s website.

Walk for Farm Animals – Bubier Park – October 19, 2013

Farm Sanctuary's Walk for Farm Animals

Every year, the animal rescue foundation Farm Sanctuary hosts hundreds of walks around the country to raise money and awareness about animal abuse and factory farming.  Participants are urged to set up a donation page through the Farm Sanctuary site.  Registration is $15 in advance and $25 the day of the event.  The walk is about 3 miles long and takes place in downtown Fort Lauderdale.  This is a great opportunity to meet other animal advocates while supporting a great cause!

For more details on the event, visit the Farm Sanctuary website or the meetup group.

Friends of Nature Music Festival – Virginia Key Beach Park – November 9 & 10, 2013

Friends of Nature Music Festival

Friends of Nature is creating the first carbon neutral event in the city of Miami.  The even hopes to bring together musicians, artists, activists, and others who share a common interest in saving the planet and the animals.  Some of the attractions include four music areas, costumes, sculptures, great vegan food, yoga, comedians, and movies on the beach.  Some of the musical performers include Matisyahu, We Are Scientists, and Hundred Waters.

For more information on the festival, visit their website.

Fall in Miami will certainly be filled with fun, sun, palm trees, adventure, and good vibes!  I’ll be attending these three events myself, hope to see you there!

Best Vegan Restaurants – South Beach, Miami

Miami is home to an amazing amount of vegan and vegan friendly restaurants.  However, sometimes it requires a little research to find out which restaurants offer the best cuisine and the most vegan options.  But you are in luck!  Because I have done that research for you.  This will be the first installment in a series of posts that will detail the best vegan restaurants in the city by neighborhood, starting with one of the most vibrant areas in the city – SOUTH BEACH!  I’ve chosen to explore three of my favorite restaurants that are each at different price levels (Inexpensive – $10 and under, Moderately priced – $10 – $20, Fine Dining – $20+).

The Cafe at Books & Books

Located in the heart of the Lincoln Road Mall, The Cafe at Books & Books is both a book store and full service restaurant. In addition to having a traditional style menu, they also have an entire vegan menu and daily vegan lunch specials.  The vegan options include wraps, rice bowls, salads and other soy based meals.  For the appetizers, the avocado salsa and yucca and leek hash browns are both vegan (although this is not noted on the menu).  They also have a full bar that includes some amazing sangria’s and other tasty cocktails.  The restaurant has entirely outdoor seating and makes for great people watching on Lincoln Road.  They are also extremely dog friendly.  (Moderately priced)

Maoz Vegetarian

I don’t know about you, but personally I LOVE falafels!  I could eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Maoz Vegetarian is essentially just a falafel restaurant that offers an entire toppings bar.  While this may sound boring, the toppings literally take these sandwiches to a whole new level!  Some of the toppings include chick peas, pickled cucumbers and eggplant, hot sauces and salsas.  In addition, they offer fresh juices, lemonades, and iced teas.  They even have a vegan rice pudding for dessert. Escopazzo Organic Italian Restaurant

If you are looking for vegan fine dining, then Escopazzo is definitely the place to go.  This is a contemporary Italian restaurant located on Washington Avenue.  The menu includes unique vegan and vegetarian appetizers such as beet carpaccio topped with marinated artichokes.  They also offer several vegan raw dishes, such as nut cheese caprese with oven dried and marinated tomatoes, linguini of zucchini with vegan Genovese-style pesto and pinenuts, and vegan lasagna. Although the menu is not exclusively vegan, most dishes can be made vegan if you speak with your waiter.  (Fine dining – most expensive)

Well, there you have it, three of my favorite places to eat while in South Beach, each of them offering a wide variety of vegan options.  So after a long day of sun bathing, shopping, site seeing, and entertainment, you’ll always know where to grab a bite.

My Vegan Journey Through Miami

Hey there!  Welcome to Palm Trees and Pomegranates, a blog that will chronicle my journey as a compassionate, vegan living in the colorful city of Miami.  My goal is to provide resources and information to other like-minded individuals regarding veganism, animal rights and healthy living all while having the time of my life in this beautiful city.  But first, a little information about myself….

My name is Jonathan and I grew up in a suburban town in the middle of Connecticut.  I spent the past six years managing international logistics for a copier company.  However, when my company offered me the opportunity to relocate to our Miami office and launch our first social media campaign, I took it and never looked back.  I have been here for eight months now and while I’m still adjusting to the lack of snow (loving it!), palm trees (amazing!) and insane drivers (scary!) I already know that this is the city I was meant to live in.  Along the way, I adopted an adorable little puppy named Zeek, made some amazing new friends who are (slowly) teaching me to speak Spanish, and found a new spark in my desire to live a more compassionate life and share that with others through writing.

Miami is one of the restaurant capitals of the United States, so in the coming weeks, I’ll be highlighting all of the great places to find vegan cuisine in this city from South Beach to Wynwood to Midtown.

Located right next to Wynwood Kitchen and Bar which offers numerous vegan options.

In addition, the city is full of juice bars, farmer’s markets, and other whole foods shops that are perfect places to find healthy and compassionate dining options.

When it comes to entertainment, Miami has it all!  I’ll soon share with you all of the great activities we have to offer such as game nights at Sweat Records with its vegan café and vegan dinner and a movie night at O Cinema (to name a few).

Miami is very pet friendly as well.  So, we’ll travel throughout the city (with Zeek) to find all the pet friendly hot spots, including the six dog parks located in Miami Beach (one of which is six blocks from my house!).

The topic of animal rights is something that I’ve grown very passionate about in recent years as I’ve become more conscious of the mistreatment of animals within various industries.  Together, we’ll explore the many ways you can support animals by volunteering or discovering other avenues that are right for you.  I’ll provide resources so that anyone, whether in the Miami area or outside, can help support equal rights for all living beings.

Along the way, we’ll make some new friends, have a few laughs and appreciate all the beauty of this city.

In addition to exploring this city, I have been working over the years to build a writing portfolio that showcases my work and personality.  I have already established that there is an audience that cares deeply about animal rights and I hope to engage with more individuals that share my passion in this area.  This blog will serve as one platform for my writing.  However, ultimately I hope to write for other web based publications that have a larger audience so my messages can reach people around the world.

Phew, we certainly have our work cut out for us.  Let’s go explore the magical city of Miami!
